Loring-Greenough House |
The Sumner Hill National Register Historic District is located in the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood of Boston, approximately seven miles southwest of the city center, in an area roughly bounded by Seaverns Avenue, Centre Street, South Street, Carolina Avenue, and the Southwest Corridor. Predominately developed in the mid- to late 1800s, the district encompasses 365 acres and contains has many fine Victorian homes in excellent condition, including Italianate, mansard, and Queen Anne style homes. The neighborhood's significant history and architectural stock is appreciated by those who live and visit here. |

Sumner Hill is and located within walking distance of Jamaica Plain's central shopping area, open space resources such as Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Pond and the Southwest Corridor park, cultural resources such as the Footlight Club and Loring-Greenough House. Near by public transportation routes serve the greater Jamaica Plain area and provide direct access to the Longwood Medical area and downtown Boston. Of the 63 buildings and 18 structures, 28 buildings are designated as non-contributing due primarily to severe alteration, temporary nature, or recent age rather than intrusion. Nonethelsess, in general the neighborhood retains its architectural integrity, and reflects a commitment to preserve architectural elements and select period appropriate siding, roofing, windows, doors, and exterior paint colors. According to one Jamaica Plain real estate agent, homes in this area are equivalent in price to those in the upscale Pondside section of Jamaica Plain. Residences in Sumner Hill range from single-family homes to larger buildings with four or more household.
